The posters are concerning. I don't remember these when we left, but...everything was so hazy maybe I missed them. [they were not there, it's fine.]
It's okay. We went to try and find out what was happening, but we found the swamp on fire instead. It must have started last night, but we didn't see anything. [she frowns deeply.] Do you...remember falling asleep at all?
[dreamwidth is a functional website who loves to send me notifs.]
Camille fell into the water, but she's okay. [none of them can talk and they're all stinky but no burns somehow.] We're alright. We couldn't stay much longer after we found the hand. We think a fight must have happened there before someone moved away.
[she frowns because yeah. that's about right.]
We were all together and then it felt like we were separated again. We couldn't leave the fog until it cleared up...I didn't know where anyone else was besides the three of us who were there. I don't like that there's something so powerful we can't predict.
At least you could use the water to put out the flames.
[ stinky... he listens in silence, frowning. ]
A hand... [ so someone lost a limb. if only the bodies didn't vanish. ] I see. I wonder if any of us were trapped there last night, like we were at the pyre.
[ did the fight start there, or come from somewhere else? hmm. ]
It is troublesome. The magic here is... too powerful for us to fight, as we are now. [ he shifts, grip tight on the naginata's staff, and breathes out a sigh. ] Their bodies have already vanished, it seems. We weren't even able to give them any rites.
We couldn't go back to get any buckets or anything to use for the water. We tried to splash them out and smother the flames as best as we could, but it wasn't working the way we wanted. But yeah, a hand. There were a lot of what looked like footprints on out on the island where we found the hand, too. But we couldn't tell how many people might've been there. They were different sizes though, so...at least two.
[it's the disappearing bodies that she's very like "hm" about because...not that unusual for where she's from in some cases but also what the hell.]
Where could they have gone already...? Hidden behind another veil?
It's possible it belongs to Aventurine-dono or Death-dono... whoever was out there. But it's hard to say when they've both disappeared.
[ he does look troubled by that bit. bodies only vanish in touken ranbu if you're a spirit who is destroyed. ]
That may be so. [ glances back at the pyre. ] There is magic here. I don't understand why, but it is preventing us from doing anything about the two of them. [ ... ] I don't like it.
I don't either. [like, outright. she just does not like that magic is blocking them from helping and magic blocked them in the first place.] But if the fog disappeared and let us look for information at all, it's possible there's another way to work around the magic preventing us from going further right now. We just have to keep looking.
[ the magic, the fog... they've only been subject to its whims since they arrived.
but she's right. even when it seems fruitless, they shouldn't give up. ]
What should we be looking for, to allow us work around it? I'm not familiar with magical restrictions like this or how to make them go away. This cult that summoned us is quite powerful.
Barriers usually have a weak point. You just have to find it to break into it and pull the whole thing apart. It may be difficult to find, but it has to exist.
Even the strongest fortifications have weak points. [ iwatooshi nods firmly, standing a little straighter. ] We'll keep looking. The answers will come to light before long.
...I only wish we had a little more time before it came to this.
[she looks a little pensive at that because that's a wholeass mood, really.]
I wish we had, too. It really sounded like we might have had the time before something changed. So...all we can do now is keep watch for those same changes. Just to make sure we catch them before anything else happens.
[they will not be able to do this, but they can certainly try.]
The best we can do is try. It was good technique on their part, to use a surprise attack. But we’ll have an idea of what to expect, now, so we won’t be so caught off guard.
[ patently false. they’ll do their best, anyway. ]
[oh the simple days before they realize there will be plenty of ther ways to catch them all off guard...]
Yup! It's..all about boosting our defenses, right? [is that the right way to say this to a sword.] If we fortify ourselves, we'll be able to step in next time.

...Are you alright, Aerith-dono?

[ no burns. ]
...I do not. I only remember talking with everyone, and then waking up to the haze. It's as if we were knocked out even without any battle.
[ which! he hates! ]
