Greed, mostly. [it always comes back to capitalism.] There's a company...Shinra Electric Power Company. They've provided electricity, weaponry, and all sorts of upgrades around the planet. But they've only managed to do this by harvesting the mako from the lifestream. They've set up mako reactors to continue funneling it from the planet and convert it into energy. Shinra's improved the quality of life for so many people that it's hard for so many of them to see how wrong it is. Not to mention they don't want anyone getting in their way.

And there's Sephiroth who has a different plan. He wants to destroy the planet to..recreate it, more or less. And become something like a god to rule over it. [a simplified version of the plot.]

It sounds like this Shinra company has set up the world exactly how they want for their profit. If they have a monopoly on it, they may as well control the world.

[there's a little smile, a little unhappy because she doesn't like the fact that shinra's doing this. it also makes her wonder how much experience robin has with this herself to understand it this way.] They have a monopoly on everything, and have their hands in a lot of places. When you're powerful and can control the story being told...people let you get away with so much more.

because, well, the shadows swarm and aerith watches this play out before her eyes, and she feels the dull ache in her chest as she sympathizes with the feelings robin has. the strong belief that this is wrong, but the equally strong love for her brother and the wish they both shared, once. she can't say that she blames her for leaping after him, even if there was a chance of never knowing what would come next.

I don't doubt that. You've never struck me as someone who'd let things stand in the way of what you want. But I can only hope it's soon. Even if he's the one rebuffing you...you two have a relationship only you two would understand.

[well it makes sense why robin would fight for certain things, though she is very unhappy to hear they really do only have each other in the way of family. it worries her, a little, what may happen if she can't get through, but she also thinks robin won't let that happen. robin doesn't give up.]
...maybe the after doesn't matter so much if you're happy with the one thing you want most. After that...you'll be able to handle anything. When the biggest trial's finished, everything feels smaller in comparison. Or at least I hope that's how it will feel for you.
