In a sense, yes. It's more like...drawing from the same source the materia can come from, but only being used by a few very specific people. I wouldn't call it unpredictable so much as being something people aren't able to use right, because they aren't connected to it.

They would've had to put it together in an emergency, so I think I can see it...

Mmhm, that's a good way of looking at it. That's how we ended up here in the first place, I think, with the monster affinities. A completed ritual, but not the exact method. Something like today needed to be more powerful because circumstances were already outside of what was normal.

...we just have to hope this doesn't happen again and they won't have to put together any more rituals. Or if they do, it won't need to be so bloody. [or, like, use any of them.]
