[again, why is it kids? why do these things happen.]
...you said your friend managed to bring back another friend. So I'm sure she's alright. Even if a ritual's gone wrong, there's always a way to reverse it. We just have to find the power ourselves. [same concept. but, more curiously:] Is it common to have powers where you're from, too?
... I can manipulate the shape and motion of soot within a certain range of myself. It's not very powerful, but with precise control, I can even create simple objects or reach things that are far from me.
[huh. that's different than the power she's used to, but at the same time it's not out of the realm of possibility. she's been able to connect with the planet and control certain things, right? so maybe it's kind of like that.]
That's pretty impressive. [...] It doesn't hurt you at all to use that power, does it? [like. if you're using the soot of your own body.]
You could probably think of it like exercising... It's a normal way to use your body's energy. And if you push the limits, you're more likely to tire yourself out than to get hurt.
[well. she does actually understand the concept so she's less worried about it at least.]
And that means if you train with it you could get stronger? [if it's still comparable to exercise.] I wonder if our powers here work the same that way, too.
[what if...we don't need the full boost to do great things with our monster powers. what if.]
Yeah. Before all of this, it felt like a lot of our powers weren't too harmful to each other but could be used a few different ways. Swapping places, changing hair colors, changing feelings...if there were other ways to use them we could maybe learn more about what to do. Like if whoever had the ability to swap people's appearances could use it on one of us and the overseers. Maybe we could listen in on their plans for us and prepare.
[...]
But we should try using them either way. As long as it isn't hurting anyone. [physically, that is. everything else is just a chance they have to take.]

...is something like that common for where you're from, Kate? People turning like that.

[ ... ]
It was a ritual that went wrong.

It seems that most shadows are able to use "soot powers" -- power that uses the soot that comes from our bodies. Everyone's power is different.

Can I ask what yours is then?

Maybe that's the case...? It would be a good reason to try using our powers often.

I'll do what I can.

That's all any of us can ask for now. Do what you can, but keep yourself safe.
