Ah. I see they picked up again this week. [angy.] ...you said it was an accident, didn't you? I know that doesn't necessarily make it better, but. [...] How bad was it in there?

Writing it off as an accident officially feels disingenuous at best, self-forgiving at worst... but we walked in, and it felt strangely peaceful and calm. We went up to the second floor where we both, presumably, were met with illusions of one of our dead friends. They weren't hostile, but the interior rapidly began deteriorating and attempting to consume us, for lack of a better way to put it.

I tried to leave with Miss Marina, but the elevator only permitted for two at a time, so...

...

Obviously, the illusion of Marina didn't make it out. I should have wised up, we already knew it couldn't be her. But the elevator wouldn't stop back at the second floor again.

In those moments, it can be hard to really grasp that the people you're seeing aren't there. Lucas thought he had to kill me again when they went to the museum, and he wasn't even sure until he saw me on the other side. [...] But I suppose knowing that now still doesn't help given it happened at all. There weren't stairs either?

I looked for it. There were stairs on the first floor, but I suspect they led to the basement. I couldn't find the second floor stairwell.

Of course not. It would have been easy if both of you could have saved yourselves. [a stab of annoyance. she hates these break-ins so bad.] Feels a bit pointed to have you forced to make a choice like that after what happened to you last week.

...You start growing used to it at some point. Or just accept that maybe some things were never choices at all.

I think some people call that fate. [which. well.] But I believe that. Some things feel like you're making a choice, but it still leads you right to the ending you were trying to work around to begin with. And you wonder if the effort mattered at all.

That's a pretty low bar, but I get it. Maybe we should try to raise the standard just a little in the future?

I don't mean it to be a low thing. Just a safe one. Aftere all, able to be left alone can include being happy enough or whatever else.

I know there are some people who can be happy alone, but I do always wonder if it's real happiness or just acceptance.

You'll have to ask them to be sure about that.

If I ever really meet one, I suppose I will. But so far that hasn't happened yet.

He talks a big game, but I don't think he does as well as he thinks when he's really by himself. But he's close, I'll give you that.

He seems to pretty much threaten it at every minor inconvenience, so I'd say so.

[ If you tell him to heal his damn wounds, he will just storm off. Teenagers. ]

He reminds me of Cloud mostly. Says they're used to working alone but has a team they've gotten so used to that they take a little time to warm up to other people. Usually they'll say they're fine and get a little annoyed if you press too much, too, but it's about learning how to talk to them.

[her opinion of kanda is very wildly different than kanda's of her, probably.]

That sounds about right, with what I've managed to glean of him and his exorcist... teams? It's not quite a squadron.

[ Him respecting Noise Marie... me too Kanda, I love Noise Marie. ]

Fortunate that he's willing to listen to most doctor's orders, but if he keeps this up, I imagine Lavi will rip off his other ear.

And then Kanda will just keep yelling at him. [she shakes her head.] The two of them...in some ways it's fortunate they were both brought here. But I think that about a few people here. That it was better they weren't necessarily brought alone.

We do seem to have a pretty high rate of acquaintances and friends coming together, don't we...?

[ So! Many! Castmates! ]

It's weird, right? I'm not the only one who thinks it's a little unusual it happened this way. I think it was actually Kanda I was talking to that it made little sense why they didn't just take 40 people from the same place since they can obviously grab more than one of us at a time.

I would've thought it was on purpose, but there's really no pattern to it from what I can see. Even with Miss Marina... we may have been in the same vicinity, and are from the overall same world technically speaking, but we may as well have been practically strangers. Definitely not to the level of you, Cloud, and Yuffie, or Suguru and Satoru... among others.

Just strange, is all. Might've just picked up people who happened to be in the close vicinity or something.

Right, you mentioned before that the two of you weren't more than acquaintances. I imagine that's changed a little since we got here though. [or she hopes. even if marina's a teenager, perhaps there's a little bit of comfort for daan to have someone vaguely familiar with his situation.]

I've been wondering why it was me, Cloud and Yuffie. There were five other people with us, and...there were plenty of other options. Same for you and Marina, wasn't it? You weren't the only ones traveling to that city. Maybe it doesn't matter so much now but it's something to think about to figure out how to get back, at least.
